Each month of the year is traditionally associated with a gemstone. For those born in January your birthstone is garnet. This semi-precious gemstone belongs to a family of minerals which exist in a rainbow of colours, from the traditional deep red through to the more uncommon bright green of tsavorite. The word garnet is derived from the Latin word granatum, meaning 'seedlike' in reference to a pomegranate seed. The first known record of garnets used in jewellery can be traced back a garnet beaded necklace which was made by the ancient Egyptians over 5000 years ago.
